From My Mother's Sewing Room to My Nimble Thimble: A Journey in Quilting

My love of sewing, and eventually quilting, began long before I ever owned a longarm quilting machine. As a little girl, I was fascinated by my mother's sewing machine. An old, brown Singer stitcher. She had a small sewing room, and I would wander in just to stare at it. I didn’t always understand how it worked, but I knew it was special. That quiet space planted the first seeds of what would later become My Nimble Thimble.
Years later, when my daughter Emily was five years old, I decided to make her a dress for kindergarten. With no formal sewing education, I headed to a local fabric store, where a helpful attendant walked me through selecting fabric, patterns, and everything I’d need. I stitched that dress together on a sewing machine I found at a yard sale for $25. That simple project turned into a lifelong love of creating meaningful, handmade pieces.
As my skills grew, so did my confidence. What started with children’s clothing eventually led to sewing more advanced garments, including Emily’s wedding dress years later. Each project taught me patience, precision, and an appreciation for quality craftsmanship.
After mastering clothing construction, I was drawn back to the quilts I remembered from my childhood. Quilting entered my life through my mother once again. I still remember helping her make the bed, smoothing out the quilt she had pieced together by hand. That quilt wasn’t just a blanket, but an heirloom, built to last and filled with family history.
In 2012, I purchased my first longarm quilting machine, and My Nimble Thimble was born. That same year, in December, I welcomed my very first quilting customer, a moment that confirmed I was exactly where I was meant to be.
Over time, I discovered my true specialty: custom t-shirt quilts. My first t-shirt quilt was made for my sister in honor of her late husband. Using his favorite t-shirts and cherished keepsakes, I carefully pieced together a quilt that captured his personality and the memories we all shared. That experience showed me the true power of quilting, how fabric, thread, and thoughtful design can preserve a story.
Today, My Nimble Thimble specializes in longarm quilting services, custom quilts, and memory quilts, with a special focus on t-shirt quilts that turn everyday garments into lasting heirlooms. Every quilt I create is treated with care, precision, and respect for the story behind it.
From my mother's sewing room to my longarm studio today, quilting has always been about more than fabric. It’s about connection, legacy, and creating something that can be passed down for generations.
